The Matthews Historical Foundation celebrated
its 20th anniversary in 2007. Comprised of dedicated
volunteers, it was founded in 1987 by a group of local citizens. Since
its beginning, the Foundation has been interested in preserving
Matthews history. A 501c3 non-profit charitable organization, we
have been caretakers of the Reid House, located at 134 West John
Street, since 1987.
In 1890, a Matthews
businessman, Edward Solomon Reid, built one of the few Queen Anne
Victorian Style houses in the area. In 1893, he sold the house to his
sister Ellen, the same year she married Dr. Thomas Neely Reid (no
relation). Upon his graduation from City University of New York, Dr.
Reid settled in Matthews and began practicing medicine in 1889. A true
country doctor, he served the citizens of the area for fifty-seven
years until his death in 1946.
Their youngest daughter,
Miss Nancy, was born at The Reid House on
January 9, 1898 and lived there until her death on July 25, 1986.
She taught in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System for 35 years.
Upon her death, the home was willed to a niece who generously gifted
the house to the Matthews Historical Foundation in 1987. When entering
the home, visitors immediately notice the 12’ tall walls with equally
long windows, with the original hand rolled glass. The heart of pine
floors and woodwork are also original. It is a wonderful example of a
house that exudes true Southern charm.
The Foundation rents the
house for special events and social occasions. Every year, they
sponsor a Gala Dinner Party in the fall and a spring Open House, at
which time the Fullwood Restoration Award is given. The Foundation
continues to pursue Matthews history projects.
