Plans History Community Meetings and Events

The Matthews Historical Foundation has announced an outstanding 2010 winter/spring Community Meeting schedule filled with wonderful speakers. Our meetings are designed to explore different facets and interest of history. All programs are free, open to the public and will be held at 7 p.m. on the last Tuesday of each month.  The February and April meetings will be held at the Matthews Branch Library, 230 Matthews Station Street, downtown Matthews.  The March will be held at the Matthews Woman’s Club, 208 South Trade Street, downtown Matthews. Refreshments will be served. The programs planned in this series are:

February 23, Hear American History come alive as Howard Burnham, renowned character actor, portrays controversial Revolutionary War hero Thomas Sumter, also known as the Carolina Gamecock, for whom Fort Sumter (of Civil War fame) is named.   Mr. Burnham’s first person living history program is witty, informative and always a crowd pleaser.  Held at Matthews Branch Public Library. Reception - see more information

March 30, Local author Larry Walker will present a Civil War program on Fort Fisher and Wilmington, C.S.A.  Mr. Walker has given presentations on Fort Fisher for over 35 years and his book, “Rebel Gibraltar”, explores the port city of Wilmington’s entire wartime experience from secession to its fall to Union forces in February 1865.   “Rebel Gibraltar” is the 2006 winner of the Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal and will be available for sale after the program.  Held at Matthews Woman's Club.

April 27, Local author Mary Norton Kratt will discuss new and old Charlotte stories from her recent book “Charlotte, North Carolina: A Brief History”.  Ms. Kratt, winner of numerous literary awards, is a published author of seventeen books of poetry, history and biography focusing on the Carolina Piedmont.  A longtime resident of the Charlotte/Matthews area, her book will be available for sale after the program.  Held at Matthews Branch Library.

May 1, Plans will be unveiled at a later date for a special “May Day in Matthews” event.  Save the date for this interesting and fun day.
